There's a little shop on the Lower East Side that doesn't call much attention to itself, but for those in the accordion world it's a haven for all things squeezebox related. And it also happens to be the last accordion shop in all of New York City.
Opened in May of 1996, Main Squeeze is a neighborhood institution-- Walter Kuhr, the owner of Main Squeeze, has watched the neighborhood change of the last 11 years, but his shop hasn't changed a bit. Rows of various accordions crowd the shelves; the walls feature vintage squeezebox photos and paraphernalia; crates of records and sheet music are stacked in the corner. There is also a piano which serves as an accompaniment for occasional performances, concerts, or readings. Kuhr stocks "anything with a bellow," as well as straps, cases, sheet music, neckties, cds and instructional videos.
In addition to making his own accordions and helming the Main Squeeze Orchestra, he's the bandleader of The Last of the International Playboys, a nine-piece latin jazz and lounge act, he plays in the big clubs of New York and Florida.
